During a bubble, when money is raining on fools, the only problem is boredom, and useless entertainment allows the “attention economy” to thrive. During hard times (e.g., a crisis, a recession, or a depression), people have real problems, and the attention should refocus on solving the problems.2
The medium may not change, and monetization will always drive incentives.3 But as layoffs happen, the people that have lost their jobs will find new and better ways to provide value.
